Russian goalkeeper “Toronto” Ilya Samsonov refused to participate in the action in support of LGBT
Russian Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Ilya Samsonov refused to participate in a rally in support of LGBT people during a National Hockey League (NHL) game. Toronto Sun reports.
Toronto did not use special jerseys for the practice, but the team’s players took to the ice in helmets with themed stickers, and some of them wrapped rainbow tape around their sticks. Samsonov was the only hockey player of the club who did not take part in the action.
Earlier, several other Russian players, Ivan Provorov of the Philadelphia Flyers and Ilya Lyubushkin of the Buffalo Sabers, did not wear rainbow uniforms. In addition, the Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers and Minnesota Wild refused to participate in the promotion.
Later it became known that the NHL thought about revising the holding of actions in support of LGBT people after the clubs refused to participate in them. League commissioner Gary Bettman felt that this distracted from the very essence of the action, which eventually fades into the background.
