UFC fighter Mokaev explained the request to remove the mention of Russia with protests against the mosque

British mixed martial artist (MMA) Muhammad Mokaev Twitter explained his request to remove the mention of his Russian origin.

The athlete said that he did not like the protests of Muscovites against the construction of the mosque. “I can say that the country in which I now live has never openly opposed mosques,” he stressed.

Earlier on April 4, Mokaev appealed to the leadership of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) with a request not to indicate Russia as his birthplace. Prior to that, the athlete’s profile indicated Russian origin.

Rumors about the construction of a mosque for 60 thousand people in the Kosino-Ukhtomsky district in Moscow began to spread online in February. At the same time, local authorities did not confirm the construction of this facility and reported that the construction in the area relates to the construction of a transport interchange hub. The Muslim community of Moscow is also not aware of the construction of a huge mosque. At the same time, Orthodox activists are organizing protest prayers in Kosino-Ukhtomsky and collecting signatures against the construction of the facility.

Mokaev was born in the city of Buynaksk, Republic of Dagestan. At the age of 12, he moved to the UK with his family. The fighter has been performing in the UFC since March 2022. In total, he has ten victories and no defeats in MMA. Another fight with his participation was declared invalid.
