Russian short track skater Sofia Prosvirnova decided to change her sports citizenship. She announced this on Instagram. (the social network is banned in the Russian Federation; it belongs to the Meta corporation, which is recognized as extremist in Russia and banned).

The 25-year-old athlete said that she was in the process of moving to the Danish team and made this decision for family reasons. She noted that the training system in the Russian national team forces her to be away from her husband, Danish skater Viktor Torup.

“The truth is that at this stage I am not ready to make such sacrifices. Values are changing. Now building a family and psychological health for me is on a par with building a sports career, ”explained Prosvirnova.

Prosvirnova is a silver and bronze medalist of the world championships, as well as a five-time European champion. As part of the Russian national team, she took part in the Olympic Games in 2014, 2018 and 2022.

At the end of February 2022, many sports organizations banned the national teams of Russia and Belarus from participating in tournaments on the recommendation of the International Olympic Committee. In some disciplines, such as motorsport, cycling, tennis, boxing, MMA and chess, the Russians continue to play in a neutral status.
