The head of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), Luc Tardif, spoke about the idea of representatives of the National Hockey League (NHL) to hold a series of matches with Russia. His words leads “Championship”.
Tardif stated that he had not heard of the plan. In a commentary for Sport-Express, the functionary noted that if the series is organized by the NHL Players Association and only representatives of the league participate in it, then this tournament will be outside the competence of the IIHF.
Earlier on April 3, journalist Aleksey Andronov, citing three independent sources, said that the Ice Hockey Federation of Canada and the NHL plans to hold three meetings with Russian players playing in the league. The series will take place no earlier than 2024. The games will be held in Canada, the cities have already been determined.
At the start of the 2022/2023 season, 50 Russian players were playing in the NHL. On February 4, ten of them took part in the League All-Star Game. In particular, the captain of the Washington Capitals Alexander Ovechkin, together with his son Sergei, performed a bullet.
