Rangers announced on Thursday that Dutchman Giovanni van Bronckhorst is the new coach of the Scottish team. He arrives to replace Steven Gerrard, who joined the English team Aston Villa.

Former player Van Bronckhorst, 46, takes over with the team at the top of the Scottish Championship, four points ahead of second-placed Celtic. The Dutchman has stints at Rangers and Barcelona during his career as an athlete.

“I am absolutely delighted to be returning to Rangers as a coach. I feel very privileged to be working with a team that is well positioned on all fronts,” said the former full-back.

Van Bronckhorst played from 1998 to 2001 for Rangers and then moved to Arsenal and Barcelona, where he won the Champions League in 2006. He also played for the Netherlands in 106 games, including the 2010 World Cup final.

He started as a coach at Feyenoord, the club in his native country where he was revealed, winning in 2017 the team’s first title in the Dutch Championship after 18 years.
