Argentina has great chances of organizing the Under-20 World Cup that FIFA took from Indonesia, the organization’s president, Gianni Infantino, revealed this Thursday in Asuncion.
“It is the world champion country. Its candidacy is very strong. We have to take the next steps to decide in the next few days,” said the head of FIFA at a press conference at Conmebol headquarters.
The leader announced that the South American country officially presented its candidacy with the support of the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and with the endorsement of the government of Alberto Fernández.
FIFA’s decision followed the ban enacted by authorities in the Asian country, with a Muslim majority, who wanted to prevent Israel’s participation.
The two countries do not have diplomatic relations. In addition, Indonesia defends the Palestinian cause.
Infantino said that there are other countries that have expressed interest in organizing the youth world cup. “Argentina has very good chances. We have to follow the process and we are going to make a decision”, reiterated the head of the entity that manages world football.
Argentina “is the first country to present its candidacy with all the requirements,” he said.
“We will make the decision in two or three days” in Zurich, he commented.
The World Cup is scheduled for May 20th to June 11th. The decision was in the hands of the presidents of the FIFA affiliated confederations.
“We all know football in Argentina. It is a country that can host a competition of this level,” he said.
Conmebol president Alejandro Dominguez said it was an urgent measure. “No one predicted what would happen in Indonesia.”
“Argentina has everything to host the Under-20 World Cup in this emergency. It is prepared for any type of football competition”, added the South American leader.
Infantino highlighted the recent conquest of the Argentines in the World Cup in Qatar-2022.
“The world is happy. At the end of the day, the sporting result is very important. But what is behind it is also fundamental: the organization”.
