The NHL Players Association said that hockey players have the right not to participate in LGBT events
The head of the National Hockey League (NHL) Players Association, Marty Walsh, praised the refusal of clubs to participate in LGBT events. His words are quoted by journalist Greg Wyshinsky in Twitter.
Walsh said that athletes have the right to decide whether or not to wear rainbow jerseys for rolling out. “I think it’s very important for the league and teams to be inclusive. We probably have something to work on,” he added.
Earlier it was reported that the Minnesota Wild refused to wear rainbow jerseys due to a ban on LGBT propaganda in Russia. According to The Athletic, the team studied the law adopted in Russia in 2022 for several days and decided not to participate in the action due to concern for forward Kirill Kaprizov.
This season, the Chicago Blackhawks and New York Rangers also refused to participate in the promotion. In addition, Russian hockey players Ivan Provorov from the Philadelphia Flyers and Ilya Lyubushkin from the Buffalo Sabers did not wear rainbow uniforms.
