The head of the IOC Bach said that sanctions against Russia were imposed for violating the Olympic truce
The head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, explained the imposition of sanctions against Russia. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
Bach said that Russia was punished for violating the Olympic Truce. He added that the issue of the Olympic Truce for the duration of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris should be initiated by the French government at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly.
Earlier, Bach said that 206 National Olympic Committees support the recommendations of the IOC on the admission of Russians to tournaments under a neutral flag. He noted that the commissions of athletes from Africa and Asia are ready to allow Russians and Belarusians to compete under their own flags.
On March 28, the IOC recommended that Russians who did not support the special operation in Ukraine be allowed to compete in a neutral status. At the same time, athletes from Russia and Belarus associated with the armed forces or security agencies are recommended to be suspended from participating in tournaments.
At the end of February 2022, most sports organizations suspended the national teams of Russia and Belarus on the recommendation of the IOC. The decision on the participation of representatives of these countries in the 2024 Olympics has not yet been made.
