Thomas Bach says 206 National Olympic Committees support IOC recommendations
The head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, expressed support for the organization’s recommendations from all associations of National Olympic Committees (NOCs). His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
“Today and yesterday we received a letter from the associations of all five continents, uniting 206 NOCs, welcoming the recommendations of the IOC and protecting the autonomy of sports,” the functionary said. He added that the commissions of athletes from Africa and Asia are ready to allow Russians and Belarusians to compete under their own flag. Bach emphasized that the influence of governments on the admission of countries to tournaments is unacceptable.
On March 28, the IOC recommended that Russians who did not support the special operation in Ukraine be allowed to compete in a neutral status. At the same time, athletes from Russia and Belarus associated with the armed forces or security agencies of their countries are recommended to be suspended from participating in tournaments.
At the end of February 2022, most sports organizations suspended the national teams of Russia and Belarus on the recommendation of the IOC. The decision on the participation of representatives of these countries in the 2024 Olympics has not yet been made.
