The Latvian Ice Hockey Federation refused to call up KHL players to the national team
The Latvian Ice Hockey Federation has refused to call up players from the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) to the national team. This was reported to RIA Novosti by the Secretary General of the organization Roberts Pluzhyts.
Pluzheyts said that goalkeeper Janis Kalninsh, representing the Khabarovsk “Amur”, and forward Nikolai Eliseev from the Vladivostok “Admiral” will not get into the team. They will miss the 2023 World Cup.
On March 27, another European country, Slovakia, refused to call up hockey players playing in Russia. Representatives of the local federation said that the decision was made for the sake of calmness and concentration of other players. Prior to this, the authorities of Latvia, the Czech Republic, Finland and Sweden banned hockey players from the KHL from playing for national teams.
In February 2022, the International Ice Hockey Federation suspended the national teams of Russia and Belarus from international tournaments. Against this background, many legionnaires of the KHL began to leave the team.
