Steven Gerrard participated in his first press conference as Aston Villa coach this Thursday. The former player and idol of Liverpool he said he was “proud” for the career opportunity.

“It’s a moment of great pride, it’s a real honor to be the coach of this football club. When the call came, I knew the time was right for me. I missed the Premier League and it’s great to be back,” said the coach.

“I played several times at Villa Park and the atmosphere is excellent. I hope the stadium is lively this weekend, I can’t wait for it,” he added. “Pressure and responsibility is what I want. That’s the exciting part, to go and prove to everyone that I’m good enough for this job, that I can take this club forward and make the fans happy,” he concluded.

Gerrard also said that, despite his winning record at Liverpool, his focus was fully on rebuilding Aston Villa. The Birmingham team faces Brighton on Saturday, in a game that marks the new coach’s debut.
