Spain was defeated by Scotland this Tuesday afternoon, in Glasgow, by 2-0, in a match valid for the second round of the group stage of the Qualifiers for the eurocup. With the setback, Fury lost the lead in their bracket.
Both teams came into the match strictly tied with three points and the same goal difference. The victory, therefore, would put one of them in first place in group A, in isolation. And the top stayed with the Scots, who saw their rivals park in second place.
The two goals of the game were scored by defensive midfielder McTominay, from Manchester United, one at each time. The Spaniards even tried to press for a draw, but they ran into little inspiration from their men up front.
According to competition regulations, the two best placed in each group earn a direct spot in the Euro 2024, which will be played in Germany – the other positions will compete in the repechage. There are still eight rounds left for the end of this initial stage.
Defeated, Spain will only play in the tournament again in September this year, against Georgia. Scotland, on the other hand, visits Norway on the next FIFA date, in June.
How was the game?
Despite a slow start to the game, it didn’t take more than ten minutes for the score to be opened. Full-back Pedro Porro slipped and was disarmed by Robertson, who crossed low for McTominay’s shot, inside the area: 1-0.
Spain responded at 22, with veteran Joselu. Merino crossed from the right into the center of the area and the attacker won the aerial dispute, hitting the crossbar. At 28 minutes, it was Rodri’s turn to be dangerous with a header that went close to the goalposts.
Porro risked a powerful shot in the next minute, but Gunn parried it for a corner. McGinn almost increased the score at 36, in a closed corner kick. Goalkeeper Kepa had to stretch and punch the ball to avoid the Olympic goal.
The second half started the same way as the previous one. With six minutes on the clock, Scotland scored once more. And again with McTominay. This time, Tierney advanced on the left, crossed in the area and, after the Spanish defense barely cleared it, the winger hit the first corner.
Behind the marker, Spain resumed the pressure, but it was the Scots who narrowly missed scoring with McGinn, in a free kick that exploded on the crossbar. Roja was only scared at 12, in a play with Iago Aspas. The player dominated the ball close to the goal, but fumbled and wasted the chance.
At 27 minutes, Nico Williams received the ball from the right, swung from one side to the other, but failed at the time of finishing and shot weakly, in the hands of the goalkeeper. YƩremy Pino took the lead at the edge of the area, in added time, but sent it out.
