The IOC asks that athletes from Russia and Belarus can compete as “individual neutrals”

He International Olympic Committee (IOC) ha gotten up this tuesday the veto to the and the athletes from Russia and Belaruswhich were under sanction since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and has recommended that the federations authorize their participation in international competitions such as “individual neutral athletes”; It has also requested that Russian and Belarusian athletes be able to compete in the qualification process for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games and the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Gamesyes ok he has not guaranteed his presence in those appointments: “It will be studied in due time”, even if, in principle, they had already achieved an Olympic place according to the classification criteria of the international federations, said the president of the IOC, Thomas Bach.

The IOC, on the other hand, advises against admitting the teams of Russia and Belarus to the competition.

In this way, the IOC Executive Board has responded to the request of the Olympic Summit, which met on December 9. The IOC maintains its sanctions on the governments of Russia and Belarus, including not hosting international sporting events in either country, not displaying any flag, anthem or other national symbol at any international competition, and not inviting any politician or leader of the two countries to any international sporting event.

In addition, athletes who “actively support the war” will not be allowed to compete, nor will those who are hired by the Russian or Belarusian armed forces or national security agencies.

The IOC has pointed out that there are currently 70 other armed conflicts and wars in the world and that “no one is requesting the exclusion” of athletes from the countries involved, and has expressed its support, once again, for Ukrainian athletes, for whom has endowed a Solidarity Fund of up to 7.5 million dollars (almost seven million euros).
