Newspaper says that Pepê, striker ex-Grêmio, can defend the Paraguayan selection

The Paraguay national team can gain reinforcement for the Qualifiers dispute. That’s because, on Monday, the Argentine newspaper olé disclosed that there is a possibility of the Brazilian Pepê being able to act for the South American country.

Currently in Porto, the former player of Guild can defend Paraguay for having dual nationality. According to the publication, Pepê still has hopes of being called up to the Brazilian national team, but may change his mind due to the great competition in the offensive sector.

Asked about the possibility of the 26-year-old player defending Paraguay, the national team coach, Guillermo Barros Schelotto, declined to discuss the matter. In a press conference, the commander also commented on the chance of midfielder Maurício, from Internacional, also defending the country.

“We were informed of the possibility of becoming naturalized as Paraguayans, but I cannot force them to do so in order to play for the national team. They are the ones who have to take this step, they have to sacrifice themselves to show that they want to play here, ”he said.

In Portugal since 2021, Pepê has been gaining more space in Porto and standing out under coach Sérgio Conceição. Despite being improvised on the right wing in some matches, the player has four goals and five assists in 25 games for Portuguese Championship.
