The Slovak Ice Hockey Federation refused to call up KHL players to the national team for the World Cup
The Slovak Ice Hockey Federation has refused to call up players from the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) to the national team. The words of the assistant head coach of the team Peter Fruhauf are given on the website of the country’s Ice Hockey Federation.
Fruhauf said that the national team had long conversations with players from the KHL. He stressed that hockey players were excluded from the team for the 2023 World Cup for the sake of peace and concentration of other players. The coach added that the athletes playing in Russia are productive enough to fight for a place in the team.
In early May, the authorities of Latvia, the Czech Republic, Finland and Sweden banned hockey players from the KHL from playing for national teams. It was noted that the decision concerns athletes who will continue to play in the clubs of the Russian league next season.
In February 2022, the International Ice Hockey Federation suspended the national teams of Russia and Belarus from international tournaments. Against this background, many legionnaires of the KHL began to leave the team.
