Russian striker of the Washington Capitals club Alexander Ovechkin scored his 822nd goal in the National Hockey League (NHL) regular season match against the Pittsburgh Penguins, RIA Novosti reports.
The second-best NHL sniper has narrowed the gap to Canadian Wayne Gretzky to 72 goals. The record holder currently has 894 goals.
On March 24, it was reported that the Washington Capitals defeated the Chicago Blackhawks in a regular season game in the National Hockey League. The meeting ended with the score 6:1. A goal and an assist from Russian forward Alexander Ovechkin helped the capital’s team defeat the rivals.
On March 22, the Russian broke another Gretzky record, which had held for 32 years. The 37-year-old forward hit 40 goals in a season for the 13th time in his career. The Canadian managed to do it 12 times.
