The head of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), Steve Simon, refused to believe that Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai sent him a letter published on the Chinese state news channel CGTN. His words are quoted on the website of the organization.
Simon said the letter only confirms his concerns about her safety and whereabouts. He called the athlete courageous because she was not afraid to talk about the abuse by the former Vice Premier of China Zhang Gaoli. The head of the WTA demanded independent proof that Shuai was safe.
Shuai’s letter to Simon was posted earlier on November 18th. In it, she denied information about her disappearance and asked the WTA not to release news from now on without her consent.
On November 3, Shuai filed charges against Gaoli on the Chinese social network Weibo. According to the tennis player, the first time a politician forced her to have sexual intercourse ten years ago. In 2018, Gaoli invited Shuai to play tennis with him and forced him to have sex again.
The 35-year-old Chinese woman retired in 2018. She is a two-time doubles Grand Slam winner. The tennis player also has two gold medals at the Asian Games.
