The press secretary of the Iraqi national team, Mohammed Imad, spoke about holding a match with the Russian team in St. Petersburg. His words are quoted by Sport24.
“Great and beautiful city. Football players and employees of the Iraqi national team – all of us in Russia feel completely safe. There are no problems, we are happy with everything,” Imad said.
The Russians will meet with the players from Iraq on March 26 at the Gazprom Arena. The game will start at 18:00 Moscow time. For the Russian national team, this will be the first home match since November 2021.
On March 23, the team played a draw with the Iranian national team 1:1. Head coach Valery Karpin noted that in the next match the composition of the Russian team will change by 90 percent.
On February 28, 2022, the International Football Federation and the Union of European Football Associations excluded Russian teams and clubs from international tournaments. Domestic teams do not play in European competitions, and the Russian team was deprived of the opportunity to compete for reaching the finals of the 2022 World Cup.
