Frenchman Patrick Vieira has been sacked as manager of Crystal Palace, the current 12th-placed in the Premier League announced on Friday, which is just three points above the relegation zone.
“The results of these last few months have put us in a difficult situation in the Championship and we decided that a change was necessary to give us the best chances of remaining in the Premier League,” said London club chairman Steve Parish in a statement.
“Patrick’s impact was significant. He took the team to an FA Cup semi-final and a respectable 12th place last season with enthusiastic football,” he added.
But the situation is more complicated this season. Crystal Palace are still winless in 2023 and their 46-year-old manager was under pressure as they edge closer to the relegation zone that Bournemouth currently open on 24 points.
The former midfielder, world champion in 1998 and European champion in 2000 with France, arrived at Crystal Palace in July 2021 with a three-year contract to relaunch his coaching career in a championship in which he was a highlight playing for Arsenal ( 1996-2005).
With the “Gunners”, a team in which he was captain, he won three editions of the Premier League and four of the FA Cup.
Vieira made his head coaching debut in 2016 at New York City FC, one of Manchester City’s satellite clubs.
In 2018, he returned to France and took charge of Nice, where he spent 30 months, managing to finish seventh and fifth in Ligue 1.
