Liverpool legend slams Arnold’s performances: ‘Very worrying’

Liverpool were eliminated from the Champions League this Wednesday after being defeated twice by Real Madrid. Former player and idol of the RedsJamie Carragher revealed to be “very concerned” with the performances of full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold this season.

“We all know that Arnold’s defensive end is not good. He needs competition at the position as he has played almost every week of the season for the last four or five years. It’s very, very worrying,” Carragher said.

In addition, the former Liverpool player questioned whether Arnold has the ability to help the team achieve its goal of qualifying for the next Champions League.

“If Liverpool want to secure a place in the Champions League every year, I’m not sure Arnold is the best choice at right back,” added Carragher to England’s CBS Sports.

Alexander-Arnold is a child of the youth categories of Liverpool and became a starter in the 2017/18 season, under the command of Jurgen Klopp. Since then, the Englishman has been one of the best full-backs in the world and stood out for his quality in supporting the attack.

However, in recent seasons, Arnold’s defensive weakness has become evident and has been accompanied by a drop in Liverpool’s overall performance. A consequence of the bad performances was the non-use of the full-back as a starter in the World Cup in Qatar, in which he played for just 33 minutes for the England team in the competition.

“Trent (Alexander-Arnold) has no defensive problems. We had a defensive problem because our (pressing) timing wasn’t the best and we take risks in defence, everybody knows that. If the timing isn’t right, you open up.” spaces and usually spaces are on Trent’s back,” Klopp responded to criticism in October 2022.
