Morocco joins Spain and Portugal in 2030 World Cup bid

At a congress held by FIFA in Kigali, Rwanda, the Minister of Education and Sports of Morocco, Chakib Benmoussa, confirmed this Tuesday that his country will participate in a joint candidacy for the world Cup 2030, along with Spain and Portugal.

The Moroccan representative read a message from King Mohammed VI revealing the agreement between the countries. If the candidacy is chosen, it will be the first Cup to take place on two different continents.

“This joint candidacy, which has no precedent in the history of football, will bring together Africa and Europe, the north and south of the Mediterranean, but also the African, Arab and Euro-Mediterranean worlds”, he said.

Morocco joins the Iberian candidacy in place of Ukraine, which was part of the original trio. The Eastern European country has been suffering from the war against Russia and has little prospect that it can recover in time to host the biggest football competition in the world.

Now, the three countries officially compete with the South American bid (Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay) to host the Cup in 2030. Egypt, Greece and Saudi Arabia also showed interest in joining to host the tournament together.
