The International Olympic Committee (IOC) got acquainted with a letter from the UK authorities, in which the country’s government called for increased pressure on the committee in terms of admitting Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competitions and the 2024 Games. In this regard, the IOC expressed the hope that the British authorities will respect the autonomy of sport, the press service of the committee said.

“The IOC has taken note of this letter. It is not up to governments to decide which athletes can compete in which international competitions. We very much hope that the British government will respect the autonomy of sport, which has been emphasized in many decisions, statements and resolutions of the UN, ”the message says.

On Saturday, March 11, the British newspaper The Guardian wrote that the head of the UK Ministry of culture, media and sport, Lucy Fraser, called on the heads of the committee’s international partners, including Coca-Cola, Intel, Samsung and Visa, to put pressure on the committee due to fears of a possible easing a ban on the admission of Russians and Belarusians to international competitions.

On January 25, the IOC announced that it was considering the possibility of individual admission to competitions for Russian and Belarusian athletes. Only athletes who did not support the conduct of a special operation in Ukraine and did not violate anti-doping rules will be able to get permission to compete in international tournaments.

The Olympic Games are to be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
