Tadej Pogacar (UAE Emirates Team) was proclaimed the final winner of Paris-Nice brilliantly, conquering the last stage to sign a hat-trick of wins in the race that were added to the one previously achieved on the fourth date.
Four kilometers after the start of the stage, Jonas Gregaard and Alexander Kristoff, both from the Uno X Pro Cycling team, jumped out of the peloton. Shortly after it was Greegaard who was left alone at the head of the race. Ahead, a group of runners, among them Ion Izagirre, they got together with the Danish. Thus, the group of escapees was made up of: Lucas Hamilton (Jayco AlUla), Jhonatan Narváez (Ineos Grenadiers), Nils Politt (Bora-Hansgrohe), Stefan Kung (Groupama FDJ), Fred Wright (Bahrain Victorious), Ion Izagirre (Cofidis) , Oliver Naesen (Ag2R-Citröen), Clément Champoussin and Kevin Vauquelin (Arkea Samsic), Kobe Goosens (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty), David De la Cruz (Astana), Jonas Gregaard (Uno X), Jan Tratnik (Jumlo Visma) , Pascal Eenkhoorn (Lotto Dstny), Lilian Calméjane (Intermarche) and Hugo Houle (Israel Premier Tech).
On the ascent to Peille the group of escapees was fragmented, others from the peloton jumped, and it was Wout Poels (Bahrain Victorious) the one who first crowned the 2nd category port. Little by little, however, the squad hunted down the men who fell behind the group of escapees, and did not let Poels have much of an advantage either. Thus, with 26 kilometers to go, the peloton led by UAE Emirates put an end to Poels’ adventure
After, the Col d’Eze passed sentence. Pogacar attacked and was followed by Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo Visma), David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) and Simon Yates (Jayco AlUla). However, after advancing a few meters Tadej Pogacar increased the pace, was left alone at the head of the race and claimed the stage win and the final victory. Vingegaard was second, gauge third, fourth yachts and mAtteo Jorgenson (Movistar) fifthall of them 33 seconds behind the winner.
Tadej Pogacar was the best in the final general classification of the Paris-Nice 2023, Gaudu second to 53 seconds and Vingegaard third at 1’39” of the leader.
