Magnus Carlsen lost to Russian Shimanov from 336th FIDE rating in an online tournament
The reigning world champion Norwegian Magnus Carlsen lost to Russian Alexander Shimanov, ranked 336th in the International Chess Federation (FIDE) rating, in the online team tournament Pro Chess League. This was reported on the tournament website.
Carlsen plays for Canada Chessbrahs. On March 9, his team played against Levitov Chess Wizards, in which Shimanov, Alexandra Kosteniuk, who joined the Swiss national team, Belarusian Denis Lazavik and Azerbaijani Rauf Mammadov play. Levitov Chess Wizards won with a score of 9.5:6.5 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament. Carlsen and Shimanov scored three points per round.
The tournament will end on May 14th. Its prize fund is 150 thousand dollars.
Carlsen has held the world title since 2013. He refused to defend the chess crown in a match with Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi. He cited a lack of motivation.
