Cherchesov warned that the possible transition of the RFU to the AFC will have long-term consequences
Former head coach of the Russian national team Stanislav Cherchesov spoke about the possible transition of the Russian Football Union (RFU) to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). It is reported by TASS.
He warned such a move would have long-term consequences. “We need to weigh what is better: wait another year and see, or quickly move on, and then play in Asian confederation tournaments for decades. I’m not saying that she’s bad or good, I don’t give her an assessment, ”Cherchesov said.
The specialist added that Russian football has historically been part of the European one. “Clubs played in the UEFA Champions League and took to the pitch in this tournament to the sound of the Champions League anthem. This, one might say, is already in our blood, ”said Cherchesov.
Earlier, the RFU held two meetings of the executive committee, at which the possibility of moving to the AFC was discussed, but no final decision was made. It was noted that the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) opposed this initiative.
Since 2016, Cherchesov has been the head coach of the Russian national team. Together with him, the national team reached the quarterfinals of the home world championship. The coach left the post after the team’s unsuccessful performance at the European Championship in 2021. Since December of the same year, Cherchesov has been heading the Hungarian club Ferencvaros.
