On a historic day for Simeone, Atlético de Madrid thrash Sevilla for Espanyol

On the day that Diego Simeone became the coach with the most games in charge of the club, the Atletico Madrid thrashed the Sevilla by 6 to 1 this Saturday, for the 24th round of the spanish league. With goals from Depay (twice), Griezmann, Carrasco and Morata (twice), the Colchoneros didn’t give the opponent a chance, who cashed out with En-Nesyri.

The Argentine coach made history by managing his team for the 613th time, surpassing Luis Aragonés, a club legend whose Simeone himself was a player. Last Friday, Cholo published an emotional open letter in honor of the former Spanish coach.

When the ball rolled, Atlético de Madrid took control of the game and opened the scoring in the 22nd minute. Depay received a great deep pass from Griezmann and invaded the area to touch the goalkeeper’s exit. It didn’t take long for the Colchoneros to extend the scoring, again with the Dutch striker.

In a new counterattack at speed, Depay took the leftover at the entrance to the area and finished strong, in the angle, with no chance for goalkeeper Bounou. Even before the break, Sevilla reacted by closing the gap with En-Nesyri’s goal, after an assist from Gueye.

In the second stage, Atlético de Madrid turned the victory into a rout, to crown their coach’s magical night. Griezmann scored a great goal in the eighth minute and increased the score. Later, at 24 and 31, Carrasco and Morata made the score even more elastic. Finally, with the game already in stoppage time, Morata scored again and closed the account in style for the party at Cívitas Metropolitano.

With the result, Atlético de Madrid reaches 45 points in third place, 14 points behind leader Barcelona. Sevilla, on the other hand, is having a disappointing campaign and is only in 16th place, with 25 points, two points away from the relegation zone.

Other Saturday games

The 24th round of the Spanish Championship had three other matches played this Saturday. At 10 am (Brasília time), the ball rolled for Getafe’s victory over Girona by 3 to 2. Later, it was Villarreal’s turn to beat Almería by 2 to 0, away from home. Shortly before the ball rolled at Cívitas Metropolitano, Elche visited Mallorca and won by 1-0.
