The number 1 in the world and current champion of the tournament, the Russian Daniil Medvedev, was clearly surpassed this Thursday in the quarterfinals of the tournament on grass in Mallorca by the Spanish Roberto Bautista (20th) 6-3, 6-2 in 1 hour and 11 minutes.
Since his round of 16 loss at Roland Garros, the Russian reached the finals of the Wimbledon preparatory tournaments in ‘s-Hertogenbosch (loss to world 205th Tim van Rijthoven) and after Halle (beaten by world 12th Hubert Hurkacz), while on the Mediterranean island he has lost in the quarterfinals.
Due to the exclusion of the Russian and Belarusian players in retaliation for the war in Ukraine, Medvedev will not participate in the Wimbledon tournament that starts on Monday.
For his part, Bautista will face the Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor (53rd) or the Swiss Antoine Bellier (303rd) on Friday for a place in the final.
Earlier this Thursday, the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, number six in the world, qualified for the semifinals of the Mallorca tournament by beating the American Marcos Giron 7-6 (7/5), 4-6, 6-3.
Tsitsipas, who continues his preparation for Wimbledon on the grass courts of the Mallorca Country Club in Santa Ponça, struggled to prevail over the American.
After winning the first set in the tie-break, Giron reacted in the second set and held on in the third until the Greek broke his serve to go up 5-3 and take the set and the match on serve.
“I had a lot of work today. It hasn’t been easy and it has demanded a lot of physical effort from me”, admitted Tsitsipas after the match.
The Greek tennis player, second seeded, will face Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi, 26, in the semifinals, who beat German Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday. (D)
