United beats Newcastle with Casemiro’s goal and ends six-year drought with League Cup title

Manchester United ended an uncomfortable lack of titles this Sunday afternoon at Wembley Stadium. With a goal scored by Brazilian Casemiro, the team led by coach Erik ten Hag beat Newcastle by 2-0 and won the English League Cup title, their first in the last six years.

Manchester United now faces West Ham next Wednesday in the FA Cup. Newcastle visit Manchester City on Saturday for the Premier League.

The match started very disputed in the midfield, where most of the Brazilians from both teams play: Casemiro, Bruno Guimarães and Joelinton. Newcastle took more possession of the ball, but failed to create great goal chances. Manchester United, more effective, took the lead in the 33rd minute through Casemiro, who headed hard after a free kick taken by Luke Shaw.

At a disadvantage on the scoreboard, Newcastle gave more space and Manchester United knew how to take advantage. In the 39th minute, after a shot by Rashford, the ball deflected off defender Botman and tricked goalkeeper Karius, back after almost two years without playing. The teams therefore went into the break with the score 2-0.

In the second stage, Newcastle tried to launch the attack to seek a tie, but found a well-posted defense and failed to pose much danger to De Gea’s goal. United, in turn, arrived through counterattacks, but made a mistake when giving the last pass, meaning that Karius also did not have many scares.

The positive result and the League Cup title ended a six-year drought without Manchester United titles. The traditional British team had not lifted a trophy since the 2016/2017 season, when they won the League Cup and the Europa League, still under the command of Portuguese coach José Mourinho.
