The Russian national football team will play in a friendly match against Iran on March 23 in Tehran. The date and venue of the meeting RIA Novosti announced the director of public relations of the Iranian Football Federation Amir Mahdi Allawi.
He also noted that during the trip to Iran, Russian Minister of Sports Oleg Matytsin and President of the Russian Football Union (RFU) Alexander Dyukov, the Iranian Football Federation signed a memorandum of cooperation with the RFU.
In 2022, the Russians played three international matches. The national team led by Valery Karpin defeated Kyrgyzstan (2:1), and also tied with Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Both meetings ended with the score 0:0.
On February 28, 2022, the International Football Federation and the Union of European Football Associations excluded Russian teams and clubs from international tournaments. Domestic teams do not play in European competitions, and the Russian team was deprived of the opportunity to compete for reaching the finals of the 2022 World Cup.
