The coffee growers have fallen 1-0 in their visit to leader Brazil, a result that temporarily removed them from the group of four directly classified to Qatar.
The central defender of the Colombian team Davinson Sánchez anticipated that the team has to add three points in its next game, at home against Paraguay on Tuesday, to continue dreaming of qualifying for the World Cup in Qatar-2022.
“At home, taking the three games we have and going abroad to look for a result, we will be in the next World Cup,” Sanchez answered this Saturday when questioned by the press about Colombia’s calculations for the five remaining dates of the South American tie.
On Tuesday, against the Guaraní team, Colombia will seek to break a four-game scoring drought.
“We have players with great characteristics when it comes to scoring (goals) we simply lacked a bit of luck,” lamented the Tottenham Hotspur defender.
The coffee growers have fallen 1-0 in their visit to leader Brazil, a result that temporarily removed them from the group of four directly classified to Qatar.
Colombia has 16 points and fell to fifth place, which gives way to a playoff against a team from another continent.
They are chasing Chile, which has the same units but a better goal difference.
Davinson said he felt “indebted” to the Barranquilla crowd for having yielded points at home throughout qualifying.
Even so, he assured that there is “an atmosphere of optimism within the group” ahead of the game against Paraguay.
The Guaranís occupy the eighth position (12 points). They come from losing 1-0 at home to Chile, in the debut of their new coach, Argentine Guillermo Barros Schelotto.
Sánchez missed his teammate Wilmar Barrios, suspended for Tuesday. “He will do a lot, a lot” against the Paraguayans.
“It’s going to be tough. It’s going to be something unusual because Wilmar has been involved in the last games, ”Sánchez said about the absence of the Russian Zenit defensive midfielder. (D)
