2010 World Champion Sergio Ramos announces retirement from Spain national team

Defender Sergio Ramos announced his retirement from the Spanish national team on Thursday. According to the 36-year-old, the announcement was made as a result of a call from coach Luis De La Fuente, in which the coach warned that he no longer has the defender.

“The time has come to say goodbye to the Spanish national team, to The Red. This morning, I received a call from the current coach who informed me that I am not and will not be part of his plans, regardless of how I act or what I do in my career, “began the player of the PSG.

Ramos, who is Spain’s most capped player with 180 caps played, criticized De La Fuente’s decision, as well as the reasons behind it.

“Humbly, I believe that this trajectory should end due to a personal decision or because my performance is not up to what our selection deserved and not because of age or other reasons that, despite not having heard them, I felt them. Age, by itself, is not a virtue or a defect. It’s just a number that isn’t necessarily associated with skill or performance,” she said.

Champion of the World Cup (2010) and Eurocup (2008 and 2012) with the Spain national team, Ramos also said he “admired and envied” players like Modric, Messi and Pepe, who, despite their age, continue to play for their respective countries and that, for him, “are the essence of tradition, values, meritocracy and justice in football.”

Ramos’ last appearance for the Spanish national team took place on March 31, 2021, in a match against the Kosovo national team, valid for the Qualifiers for the following year’s Cup. From then on, the player was no longer called up, even being left out of the squad that traveled to Qatar..

Finally, the player, who is also the ninth top scorer in the history of the Spanish national team, with 23 goals scored, thanked the fans for their support during his time with the national team.

“I take away unforgettable memories, all the titles we fought for and celebrated together and the tremendous pride of being the Spanish player with the most international titles. This shield, this shirt and this crowd made me happy. I will continue cheering for my home country with the emotion of being privileged to have been able to represent it 180 times. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who always believes in me”, concluded Sergio Ramos.
