Sergio Ramos says he sadly accepted having to leave the Spanish national team

Sergio Ramos has announced his retirement from the Spanish national team. The athlete spoke on Instagram (social network banned in Russia; owned by Meta, which is recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).

Ramos said that the team’s new head coach, Julen Lopetegui, called him the previous morning and said he no longer counted on him. “I humbly believe that this path deserved to end by my own decision or because of the inconsistency of my game with what the national team deserves, but not because of age or other reasons,” admitted the defender.

The athlete noted that he accepted this fact with sadness, but with his head held high and gratitude for the years spent in the national team. “I will continue to cheer for my country from home, feeling privileged after 180 games for the team,” he added.

On November 17 last year, the Globe Soccer Awards named Ramos the best defender in football history. In 2020, France Football magazine also recognized the Spaniard as the most outstanding player in this position.

Together with the Spanish national team, Ramos became the world champion and won the European championship twice. He also holds the record for the most appearances for the Spanish national team. In the 2022/2023 season, the 36-year-old athlete plays for Paris Saint-Germain.
