After reaching two semifinals in world Cup followed with Croatia, defender Dejan Lovren announced, this Thursday, his retirement from the national team. The 33-year-old communicated his decision in an open letter to fans on his social media.

βThe time has come to say my last goodbye to the Croatia national team. However, I will always be a big fan of ‘Vatreni’ (the team’s nickname) and will follow the team in every matchβ, he stated.
Lovren debuted for Croatia in 2009 in a friendly against Qatar. In all, the defender played 78 times for the national team, participating in three World Cups. Eliminated in the first phase in 2014, the athlete was runner-up in 2018 and won third place in 2022.
Lovren is currently on his second spell at Lyon, France. The defender, who was revealed by Dinamo Zagreb, has also worn the shirts of Southampton, Liverpool and Zenit.
