USADA Head Tigert Thanked WADA for Decision to Appeal Valieva’s Excuse
The head of the American Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), Travis Tigert, praised the decision of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the decision of the disciplinary committee of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) to find figure skater Kamila Valieva not guilty of violating anti-doping rules. It is reported by USA Today.
The official from the United States thanked WADA, noting that their actions are aimed at restoring confidence in the global anti-doping system. “Now let’s hope that the hearings will be quick and open to the public so that athletes whose dreams hang in the balance can have confidence in the final result,” Tigert said.
The WADA decision became known on February 21. They called the conclusions of RUSADA incorrect and used the right to file a lawsuit under the terms of the World Anti-Doping Code. The organization called for Valieva to be disqualified for four years.
On January 13, RUSADA informed WADA that Valieva was not at fault for the anti-doping rule violation. At the same time, the figure skater was deprived of the gold of the Russian Championship-2022. WADA was unhappy with the decision.
At the 2022 Olympics, Valieva won gold in the team competition, but the Russian team was not awarded due to a doping scandal with her participation. In the sample of the skater from December 2021, traces of the banned drug trimetazidine were found. At the same time, CAS allowed her to participate in the individual tournament, where she took fourth place.
