Salernitana coach Davide Nicola, fired in January and reinstated two days later, was fired again this Wednesday to be replaced by Portuguese Paulo Sousa, formerFlamengo.
In mid-January, the club announced Nicola’s departure after a tough defeat against Atalanta (8-2). But owner Danilo Iervolino ended up choosing to keep the coach, a key player in staying in Serie A won last year.
His second life lasted less than a month because Salernitana, currently 16th in the league, was beaten 1-0 by Hellas Verona (18th) on Monday in a crucial game for permanence.

After a good start to the season, the club from Salerno, south of Naples, stalled in early November, picking up just five points in the last ten rounds.
After announcing Nicola’s resignation, the salernitana reported “having reached an agreement with Paulo Sousa” to lead a team that receives Lazio on Sunday, for the 23rd round.
The 52-year-old former Portuguese midfielder is an old acquaintance of the Italian Serie A. He managed Fiorentina (2015-2017) and played for Juventus and Inter Milan in the 1990s.
After passing through Florence, Sousa managed Bordeaux (2019-20), the Polish national team (2021) and in December 2021 he moved to Brazil to command Flamengo.
Also this Wednesday, another Serie A club, Spezia (17th), announced the resignation of their coach Luca Gotti, without specifying the name of his successor.
