The technician of Milan, Stefano Pioli, considered this Monday that the economic disparity with the main Premier League clubs has become “too big”. The Italian, on the other hand, stated that his team will be able to face the Tottenham in the round of 16 of Champions Leaguethis Tuesday, at 5 pm (BrasÃlia time).
“I prefer to focus on the sporting aspect but we cannot rival them economically,” Pioli told a news conference at the Italian team’s training centre.
“They spent 900 million euros (R$ 5 billion) and we, in Italy, did not spend anything, which demonstrates that there is a very large economic gap”, added the coach, referring to the amount disbursed by the clubs of the English First Division in the winter transfer window in Europe in January.
Despite everything, Pioli believes in a victory for Milan on Tuesday over the London team, “a team with English characteristics, which has a direct” and “intense” game.
“We think we have a level equal to that of Tottenham and that we can go through,” added the coach.
After a difficult start to the year, Milan defeated Torino by 1-0 last Friday, for Italian Championship. The victory came thanks to a goal by French striker Olivier Giroud, who in England wore the shirts of Arsenal and Chelsea.
In the group stage of the Champions League, the Milan team finished second in their group, just behind Chelsea. The team led by Pioli plays at home to seek victory and go into the return game with the advantage on the scoreboard.
