On January 23, 2022, Karim Benzema was the victim of a robbery at his home located in the Ciudalcampo urbanization, in the north of Madrid. The striker was playing a match against Elche that Sunday at the Santiago Bernabéu and two men aboard a BMW motorcycle took the opportunity to jump over the fence and sneak into his home.
The assailants broke a blind and a glass slider at the back, accessed the main floor and in less than 50 minutes left the place with the two guys carrying a few bags with jewelry and sunglasses inside: between $105,000 and $213,000 in assets, according to the complaint, the newspaper publishes ACE from Spain.
“There were players who were angry, jealous and said that I was outshining them”
now the diary abc He has had access to the documentation of the case and details how the investigation process was developed and how the authorities found the alleged culprits in France. That’s where the assailants moved shortly after leaving Benzema’s house, and it is that in the nearest town there was a car waiting for the two men who were traveling on the motorcycle.
‘I will never speak of France again’, Karim Benzema’s response when asked about the 2022 World Cup in Qatar
Eleven hours later they had already crossed the border. The evidence that has allowed this to be known was a small geolocation device that was in one of the luxury bags. The coordinates show that the device was stopped at a gas station in Valcarce de Fonolleres, in Lleida, and the establishment’s security cameras allow three guys to be seen refueling in a car with French registration. One of them is already wearing a Gucci backpack with an embroidered cat that hours before was at Benzema’s house.
“We take Benzema for an idiot and kick him out,” the reproach of a French journalist
The next step for the trackers is clear: check the license plate. It is a rental car and in a matter of seconds they have the identity of the man who rented it, a 25-year-old who answers to the initials DM and who is not registered.
The trace allows us to know that they left Marseille to cross the border on January 18, that they stopped in Burgos and then went to Madrid. The last image, ten minutes from Benzema’s house: “They came expressly from Marseille to commit the robbery”, they say from the Police as stated abc in exclusive.
Blood, irrefutable proof
The criminals had to carry out the rapid assault, but one of the most difficult challenges was breaking through to access Karim Benzema’s home. They had to break the glass, and the investigators noticed that there was “a reddish residue” on the window that was immediately associated with blood.
The occasional drop appeared in areas such as the storage room and, when checking the DNA, the authorities found matches in France: CN, a 22-year-old young man from Marseillaise with a history of drugs and extortion.
The investigation did not end there. The authorities continued to analyze everything around the rental vehicle and found traffic tickets, including one near Montpellier when they were returning from Spain.
One was signed by M. Z, a 24-year-old from Marseille, another had been sent to the house of KS, also from Marseille and in his twenties. They could have the three from the gas station like this. Already in September the news broke: the boy who rented the car had been murdered in May in a neighborhood of Marseille.
CN was arrested last October at dawn in La Junquera, a Girona municipality located on the border between Spain and France. He was transferred to Alcobendas and refused to testify, for which the judge sent him to provisional prison for flight risk. The charges could go from burglary in an inhabited house to criminal organization.
On the other hand, the court is still waiting for the other two suspects to testify in France, which is why the judge has extended the case for another six months. The big change for Benzema could come if he decides to enter the case as a victim as they have offered him, because according to abc, the one that appears for now is the player’s partner. (D)
