We have known for three weeks that Fernando Santos was the coach of the Polish national team. The European champion with the Portuguese team in 2016 replaced Czesław Michniewicz, with whom the Polish Football Association did not extend the contract after the World Cup in Qatar.
Santos was one of the many names that appeared in the media in the context of running our national team. In addition to Santos, PZPN was supposed to talk to m.in. with Roberto Martinez, Paulo Bento and Vladimir Petkovic.
The latter was the favorite of the former Polish representative – Tomasz Hajta. – This is the decision of the president, Cezary Kulesza, who he chose as the coach. There was a time when many names came up. It seemed to me that the closest name in terms of our mentality and our country would be Petkoviæ – said Hajto in the Sunday program “Cafe Futbol” on air.
Hajto: It seemed to me that the closest name would be Petkovic
– As far as I know, the talks were ongoing, the contract was being negotiated. The option went in the other direction. On the way there was also the subject of Paulo Bento. But it ended with coach Santos.
– Santos probably has the greatest achievements of all those mentioned when it comes to the work of a manager. No matter who we choose, time will tell. Each coach from abroad will be held accountable in Poland primarily for the results – concluded Hajto.
Santos will make his debut in the new role on March 24 in Prague against the Czech Republic. Three days later we will take Albania. These will be matches in the qualifiers for the European Championship in 2024, which will be held in Germany.
