Russian Islam Makhachev defeated Volkanovski and defended his UFC title for the first time
Russian mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Islam Makhachev defeated Australian Alexander Volkanovski in the main fight of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) tournament. The broadcast was conducted on the Match TV website.
The fight took place at UFC 284 in Perth, Australia. The Russian won the opponent by unanimous decision. Thus, he defended the organization’s lightweight title for the first time and will now lead the ranking of the promotion’s best fighters.
Volkanovski changed weight category for this fight. He still holds the UFC Featherweight Championship.
On October 23, Makhachev turned out to be stronger than the Brazilian fighter Charles Oliveira at the UFC 280 tournament in Abu Dhabi. The 31-year-old Russian defeated his opponent by choke and became the UFC lightweight champion.
