The last few days for Arsenal have not been the best. Mikel Arteta’s team were first knocked out of the FA Cup by losing 1-0 away to Manchester City, then unexpectedly succumbed to relegated Everton in the league by the same margin. On Saturday, the “Gunners” returned to the Emirates Stadium hoping to return to a winning path.
Arsenal’s woes continue. Controversial draw with Brentford
Brentford, which Arsenal faced on Saturday afternoon, is a team that has been doing great this season against the biggest clubs in the Premier League. 4-0 at home to Manchester United, 2-1 away to Manchester City, 3-1 at home to Liverpool, as well as draws with Chelsea and Tottenham showed that even despite winning the first match 3-0, the English league leader could not expect an easy crossing.
This was also confirmed on the pitch of the Emirates Stadium. Although, as expected, the hosts had an optical advantage, in the 25th minute it should have been 0:1, but in a perfect situation Ivan Toney hit the crossbar from a few meters.
After a mediocre and goalless first half, there was much more going on in the second. We also scored goals. Arsenal managed to take the lead in the 66th minute when a dynamic action from the right wing and a flat cross from Bukayo Saki was closed by substitute Leandro Trossard, who had come on the pitch just four minutes earlier. For the Belgian, who came for €30m from Brighton in the winter, it was his first goal for the Gunners.
After the change of sides, Arsenal had a clear advantage, but one of Brentford’s few attacking forays resulted in an equalizer for the visitors. It took place in the 74th minute thanks to the main weapon of Thomas Frank’s team – set pieces, in this case a free kick. In the huge confusion in the penalty area of Arsenal, Christian Norgaard behaved most consciously, who played the spade in front of the goal, and Ivan Toney had to direct it with his head into the empty goal.
The “Gunners” demanded that Norgaard’s position be whistled for offside, but the referees and VAR were of a different opinion. Replays, however, leave a lot of doubt about this.
This goal, his 13th this season, Toney dedicated to former Brentford player – Sergi Canos (now Olympiacos Piraeus), whose mother died in recent days.
Arsenal could not score a second goal and the Premier League leaders drew 1-1 at home with Brentford, which put the “Gunners” advantage over second-placed Manchester City (both teams have 21 matches played) to six points (51 :45). Brentford with 34 points is eighth.
