The unexpected decision of one of the biggest stars of cycling. This is the last season

Rohan Dennis is one of the biggest stars of the peloton of the last decade. The Australian made himself known to the fans primarily as an excellent specialist in individual time trials, in which he had no equal two years in a row. At the same time, teams often took advantage of his decent finish and solid ride in the mountains.

Successful career

For over 10 years spent in the professional peloton, the 32-year-old competitor has proven his great talent many times, e.g. winning the world time trial championships in Innsbruck (2018) and Harrogate (2019) and winning one stage of the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia, as well as two stages of the Vuelta a Espana.

Dennis also had a large share in the great triumphs of his colleagues. We are talking here, among others on Tao Geoghegan Hart’s victory in the entire 2020 Giro d’Italia, when the Australian was his main adjutant. The Australian made his mark in particular on stage 18 with a powerful selection on the climb to Passo dello Stelvio, forcing race leader Joao Almeida to surrender.

Quarrels and misunderstandings

Although the 32-year-old is considered by the vast majority of fans to be an extremely nice player, in his career there have also been several large quarrels with the bosses of the teams in which he competed. A misunderstanding with the Bahrain-Merida authorities during the 2019 Tour de France had the biggest impact on the competitor’s reputation. Then, the day before the individual time trial stage in Pau, of which Dennis was the favourite, the Australian decided to pack up and withdraw from the race.

Two months later, at the World Championships in Harrogate, the seasoned time-trial specialist took part in the race for the rainbow jersey on the bike he had used while racing for the BMC team. At the same time, his equipment was unmarked, as he was under contracts with the Chinese Merida until the end of the season, resulting from an expiring contract.

End of career

While the 2023 season is only just beginning, Dennis has already decided to make one of the most important decisions of his life. In social media, the player published information about plans to retire at the end of this year.

“Thank you Melissa Dennis for your support throughout my professional career and in raising two of the best children I could ask for. Dear Cycling, I will always be grateful for what I got from you. I still have a long and hard season ahead of me, but I can say with certainty that this is the last one for me.

Currently, Dennis is a rider of the Jumbo-Visma team, where he has already won the second stage of the Tour Down Under. In the coming months, we should see him in at least one Grand Tour.
