On Wednesday at 21:00 Feyenoord hosted NEC Nijmegen at their home stadium in the round of 16 of the Dutch Cup. The meeting was very exciting and after 120 minutes of the game the fans witnessed as many as eight goals. There could and should have been more goals.
Incredible performance by the goalkeeper of NEC Nijmegen. He saved 23 shots
The hosts fired as many as 50 shots in this match, 27 of them were on target, but the ball went into the net only four times. All thanks to the great attitude of the goalkeeper of the visiting team Mattijs Branderhorst. The 29-year-old defended as many as 23 shots and thus broke the record of the Sofascore portal. It is worth noting that the Dutchman is a reserve goalkeeper of the 10th Eredivisie team on a daily basis.
“Until tonight, since we collect the data, no goalkeeper has scored more than 19 saves in one match. Mattijs Branderhorst from NEC Nijmegen faced 27 shots (!) in the Dutch Cup clash with Feyenoord and broke our record. He made 23 three saves” – we read. “He was man of the match,” said Feyenoord midfielder Orkun Kokcu.
Squawka, in turn, noticed that Branderhorst broke the record of Yann Sommer, who had so far had the most saved shots in one game in the top five leagues (19). This is also a Bundesliga record.
Branderhorst’s brilliant attitude did not guarantee his team a promotion. The game was tied 4-4 after extra time and penalties were needed to decide the game. In them, Feyenoord turned out to be better and advanced to the quarter-finals of the Dutch Cup.
