This Thursday, a Paris court sentenced former France captain Patrice Evra to pay a fine of R$5,669.00 for making homophobic statements in 2019, in a criticism of the Paris Saint Germain (PSG).
“Paris, you’re all fags, you’re all fags. It’s all the men talking here,” Evra said at the time, in a video broadcast on social media after Manchester United’s win over PSG.
The associations Mousse e Stop Homophobia filed a complaint for “public insults against a group of people because of their sexual orientation”, although the court found him for “non-public insults”.
For these facts, the 41-year-old former player was sentenced to a fine of BRL 5,669.00, as well as to pay BRL 8,503.00 in damages to the two associations and a further BRL 5,669.00 each for costs .
For the lawyer of the associations, Étienne Deshoulieres, “the homophobic words of a personality like Patrice Evra fuel hatred and violence against LGBT people”.
“Especially in countries where homosexuality is criminally punishable, such as Senegal, his country of origin,” added the lawyer in a statement.
Patrice Evra’s lawyer declined to comment on the decision for now, waiting to speak with his client, who currently resides in Dubai.
