In the last days of the winter transfer window, the topic of a possible transfer of Sofyan Amrabat to FC Barcelona appeared. The Catalan club saw him as the successor to Sergio Busquets, whose contract is only valid until the end of this season. Barcelona could not afford a permanent transfer due to the restrictions of the Financial Fair Play in Spain, which is why they offered Fiorentina a loan with an option to buy for a total of €40 million. The Italians did not accept this proposal.

BeIN Sports journalist Achraf Ben Ayad tweeted that Sofyan Amrabat was ready to go to Barcelona and even play there for free until the end of the season. He wanted to give his salary to Fiorentina. “He offered the club the salary he was supposed to receive from Barcelona in order to leave freely on loan,” writes Ben Ayad. In addition, the journalist reported that Amrabata’s agent rejected offers he had received from Chelsea and Manchester United because the Moroccan midfielder only wanted to go to Barcelona.

Spanish daily Mundo Deportivo has reported that the subject of Sofyan Amrabat at Barcelona will return in the summer as the Moroccan international is on his wish list before the start of next season. Amrabat joined Fiorentina in January 2020 for €19.5m from Hellas Verona, but finished the 19/20 season on loan at his former club. Since then, the Moroccan midfielder has made 85 appearances for the Tuscany side, scoring one goal. His contract with Fiorentina runs until the end of June 2024.
