IOC: OI-2022 team tournament medals will be awarded after the completion of the investigation into Valieva’s case
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) spoke about the decision to award the medals of the figure skaters team tournament at the 2022 Games. The statement of the organization leads USA Today.
“Only the completion of the investigation of the case [россиянки Камилы Валиевой] will allow the International Skating Union (ISU) to announce the final results of the team tournament, and the IOC to decide on the distribution of medals, ”the message says. It is noted that since the case concerns a doping test taken outside the Olympic Games, but which influenced the results of the competition, the IOC hopes to consider it as soon as possible.
On January 13, the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) informed the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) that Valieva was not guilty of an anti-doping rule violation. WADA is not happy with this verdict of the Disciplinary Committee and will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). At the same time, the figure skater was deprived of the gold of the Russian Championship-2022.
At the 2022 Olympics, Valieva won gold in the team competition, but the winners – the teams of Russia, the USA and Japan – were not awarded due to a doping scandal with her participation. In the sample of the skater from December 2021, traces of the banned drug trimetazidine were found. At the same time, CAS allowed Valieva to participate in the individual tournament, where she took fourth place.
