The official representative of the French government, Olivier Veran, announced the timing of the decision on the admission of Russians to the 2024 Olympic Games. His words are reported by Le Figaro.
“No official decision has yet been made in conjunction with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In this regard, a decision should be made in the summer,” Veran said. He added that the French authorities will continue to implement international sanctions against Russia.
On January 26, the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, supported the participation of the Russians in the tournament in a neutral status. “I think this is the time for athletes and they should not be deprived of the opportunity to compete,” she stressed. However, on February 7, Hidalgo retracted her words and spoke out against the idea.
On January 25, the IOC announced that it was considering the possibility of individual admission to competitions for Russian and Belarusian athletes. Athletes who did not support the conduct of a special operation in Ukraine and did not violate anti-doping rules will have a chance to get permission to compete in international tournaments.
The Paris Olympic Games are scheduled to take place from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
