In 2022, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona were excluded from the meeting of the Control Body of the Spanish football federation. Javier Tebas said there was a “conflict of interest” between the clubs and the federation. The head of the local association referred to the participation of the teams in the project of creating the “Superleague”, but in fact it was about the process of selling television rights to the countries of Asia and Oceania. Both clubs refused to leave the meeting despite being disenfranchised.
The court accepted a joint lawsuit by Real Madrid and FC Barcelona
According to the Spanish “Sport”, the day after that meeting, Real Madrid and Barcelona filed a joint lawsuit, which was admitted to the Court of First Instance in Madrid. In it, club bosses noted that their fundamental right of association “has been violated” and previous agreements “have been breached”.
The daily “El Periodico de Espana” adds that both clubs complain that Tebas prevented them from attending and voting on various points during the three meetings of the body, which took place from March to May 2022. It was especially painful for them that there were six members sitting there. In addition to Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, the president of LaLiga, these were Atletico, Osasuna and Ponferradina at the time.
The main reason for the indignation of the clubs led by Joan Laporta and Florentino Perez was the fact that representatives of Atlético were allowed to meetings normally. Despite the fact that they also participated in the “Superliga” project, no consequences were drawn against them. It remains to wait for the verdict of the court.
