16-year-old hockey player of the Russian national team bypassed Ovechkin and Tretyak

SKA striker Matvey Michkov made his debut in the Russian national team in the Karjala Cup match against the Finnish national team. The correspondent of “Lenta.ru” informs about it.

The 16-year-old forward became the youngest debutant in the history of Russian hockey, both Soviet and Russian. He bypassed Alexander Ovechkin, who first appeared on the ice as part of the national team at the age of 17 years 11 months and 15 days. Michkov also broke the record of Vladislav Tretyak. The goalkeeper made his debut for the USSR national team at the age of 17 years, seven months and eight days.

In 2021 Michkov helped the Russian junior team win gold in the Glinka / Gretzky Cup. He became the tournament’s top scorer with 13 points in five games. On account of his eight goals and five assists.

Michkov is the first player born in 2004 to play in a Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) match. The forward is considered one of the favorites for the National Hockey League (NHL) draft in 2023. However, the striker has reached an agreement with SKA that he will continue performing in Russia until the 2025/2026 season.
