Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Paraguay launch bid to host 2030 World Cup

The governments and football federations of Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Paraguay launched this Tuesday, in Buenos Aires, the official joint candidacy of the countries to host the world Cup 2030, the centenary year of the first edition of the tournament.

“We are convinced that FIFA has an obligation to honor the memory of those who organized the first World Cup,” said CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez at an event at the Argentine Football Association (AFA) building.

Uruguay was the host and champion of the first World Cup, held in 1930, with a 4-2 victory in the final over Argentina, champion of the last edition of the tournament, in 2022.

The South Americans will run for the organization of the 2030 World Cup with the joint candidacy of Spain and Portugal (with Ukraine as a guest); Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Greece; and that of Morocco.

The next World Cup will be held in 2026 in the United States, Mexico and Canada. The number of participants will increase from 32 to 48 in the group stage.
