On the night of Sunday 5 to Monday 6 February there was an earthquake in Turkey. The epicenter was about 30 km from the city of Gaziantep. The strength of the quake was estimated at 7.8 on the Richter scale. A total of 40 aftershocks were recorded. According to some seismologists. President Recep Erdogan declared a state of emergency, which meant the suspension of sports games until further notice. In addition, seven days of national mourning have been declared in Turkey.

Taha Akgul, a Turkish wrestler, reported on social media that a wrestling club in the city of Kahramanmaras was demolished as a result of the earthquake. The 2016 Olympic gold medalist in Rio de Janeiro reported that as many as 30-40 wrestlers were trapped under the rubble. “The building of the wrestling club has also been demolished. Our athletes are under rubble. We are waiting for urgent help. Help me, my God,” Akgul wrote.

The wrestlers are not the only people found in the rubble after the earthquake. Earlier, the media reported the disappearance of Christian Atsu, a Hatayspor footballer. Also under the rubble is Taner Savut, sporting director of Hatayspor. Earlier, Burak Oksuz, Bertug Yildirim and Kerim Alici were pulled out of the ruins. Yeni Malatyaspor’s goalkeeper Eyup Turkaslan is also expected to be under the rubble. This is the worst catastrophe since 1939. Everyone is putting their heart into finding and extracting people from the ruins, although winter and cold temperatures make things difficult, Erdogan said.

According to information provided by the Turkish Ministry of Health, at least 1,651 people died and 11,119 people were injured as a result of the earthquake. Countries such as Austria, Finland, Germany, Italy, Hungary, Greece and India have already offered Turkey assistance after these unfortunate events.
